The celebration of Youth Month was highlighted by the impact of football and motivation as Diepkloof Ladies FC, a participant in the Hollywoodbets Super League, competed against the Germiston High School Girls Team in a unique friendly match arranged by the Marumo Cares foundation, which serves as the community development arm of Marumo Gallants FC that registered Diepkloof Ladies FC, held at Germiston High School on Thursday, 12 June 2026.
This event formed part of Marumo Cares’ ongoing commitment to youth development and the empowerment of women through sport. By bringing together professional footballers and aspiring young athletes, the initiative created a platform for education, motivation, and meaningful interaction both on and off the field.
In addition to the competitive action, the day emphasized the importance of encouraging young girls to pursue their dreams while highlighting the significant role that sport plays in building confidence, discipline, leadership, and social cohesion.
The programme included motivational speeches from prominent figures in women’s football and education, who shared powerful messages about opportunity, resilience, and the importance of believing in one’s potential. Jabulile Baloyi, Head Coach of Diepkloof Ladies and a former Banyana Banyana player, delivered an inspiring speech that challenged outdated perceptions of women in sport, reminding the audience that football is for everyone.
“Talent is not defined by gender,” she told the students. “As Diepkloof Ladies, we strive to give our best because we are here for ‘her’.” She encouraged the young girls to remain confident in their abilities and to pursue their passion for the game, regardless of societal stereotypes.
Mr Malinga, a teacher at Germiston High School, reinforced the message of empowerment by drawing on South Africa’s rich legacy of women-led activism. He reminded the students of the strength that comes from unity and self-belief.
“When women stand together, nothing can stop them. You are powerful,” he said.
He also called on the professional players to continue guiding and mentoring the next generation, stressing the importance of creating pathways for young girls who aspire to play football at the highest level.
The highly anticipated match kicked off at 14:00 and showcased the growing talent within women’s football. Diepkloof Ladies demonstrated their experience and quality, taking a 2–0 lead into half-time before eventually securing a 4–2 victory.
Despite the result, the Germiston High School girls delivered a spirited performance and earned admiration for their determination and fighting spirit against seasoned Super League opposition.
A standout performer on the day was Grade 12 goalkeeper Mamello Mokotjo, whose remarkable saves kept her team competitive throughout the match. Her composed and resilient display highlighted the wealth of promising talent emerging from South Africa’s school football structures.
Sharing the field with Hollywoodbets Super League players provided the Germiston High School girls with a valuable learning experience and a clearer understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest level.
The event successfully combined competition, education, and inspiration, reinforcing Marumo Cares’ belief that sport can serve as a powerful catalyst for social change and youth development.
By connecting aspiring footballers with established role models, the initiative created lasting memories while motivating the next generation of women footballers to dream bigger and work harder towards achieving their goals.
